What Is PLA and Why Is It So Popular?

Before diving into microwave use, it helps to understand what PLA-polylactic acid-is. PLA is a biodegradable plastic made from renewable resources like corn starch or sugarcane. It's often used to make cutlery, plates, cups, and food containers because it's strong, lightweight, and compostable under industrial conditions.

The popularity of PLA tableware stems from its environmental benefits, but unlike traditional plastic or ceramic dishes, PLA has different heat tolerance characteristics.

Is PLA Tableware Microwave Safe?

Here's the short answer: most PLA tableware is not microwave safe.

Unlike trasitional plastics products, PLA begins to lose its shape and structural integrity at temperatures around 60°C to 70°C . Since microwaves typically heat food above these temperatures, using PLA in the microwave can cause warping, softening, or even melting.

This is not just a matter of whether the tableware works well - if overheated, it may also release degraded particles or affect food safety.
